From nearly the very beginning, I knew that I wanted my rendition to be inclusive in every way, which would challenge me in multiple ways. I want LGBTQIA2+ representation, diversity in ethnicities and nationalities as well as having different cognitive functions be prevalent in the story. While I want to be inclusive, I don't want it to seem as if I'm trying too hard. I just want this world to be made up of characters that hopefully people can relate to or associate with. I want it to represent the world that we live in today, full of so many different kinds of people.
Holmes' sexuality and cognitive functions are widely discussed amongst Sherlockians. I believe him to be a wonderful representative of asexuality and/or aromanticism. Many will also describe him as being on the autism spectrum. I have been performing extensive research on these topics to further understand them so that I can use them in a way to help others feel seen.
Shirleigh is canonically on the autism spectrum and neurodivergent. Her mind works in ways that others simply cannot understand. I don't think she understands her own mind sometimes.
Juniper is pansexual. She believes that it does not matter who you are on the outside because we are all the same on the inside. Something really cliché, but I feel like it's really powerful and can hopefully resonate with some people.
I have been working on character designs that hopefully represent those who do not have a lot of representation to begin with. I rarely see characters in media who are amputees or paraplegic, especially when it's not related to something militaristic. There are also those who have albinism and vitiligo who I feel are very underrepresented, so I am hoping that my characters who have such characteristics help them feel seen.
