Scottish author and physician
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is the creator of Sherlock Holmes. The world was introduced to the great detective in 1887 in "A Study in Scarlet". Doyle wrote four (4) novels and fifty-six (56) short stories detailing the adventures of Holmes and his companion, John Watson.
Sir Conan Doyle attended the University of Edinburgh Medical School, where he studied medicine and would later earn a Doctor of Medicine degree.
It is said that Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, a Scottish surgeon and one of Sir Conan Doyle's professors at Edinburgh.
An avid writer, Sir Conan Doyle has a multitude of works, which include:
The Mystery of Cloomber (1888)
The Narrative of John Smith (Unfinished)
The White Company (1891)
Sir Nigel (1905)
He did not recognise the Sherlock Holmes stories to be amongst his best works. He was extremely proud of his historical novels.
