The story's name has changed several times. It was originally called "Partners in Crime" but I didn't like how basic it sounded. It changed to "A String of Fate" for a while, I love the concept of red strings of fate but ultimately decided against this title. It may be used for an arc of sorts. I was contemplating "Strings of Fate", and "Beneath this Surface" before eventually settling on what it is now.
Turmoil; a state of great disturbance, confusion, or uncertainty.
I have placed a comma after the current title to imply a pause. The sentence doesn't end. It can apply to every character for each of them wear a mask of some sort. The comma leaves room for interpretation. What's beneath the mask of each character?
The story takes place in the Neo-Victorian Era which spans from 2037 to 2101.
Creating these character designs has solved a lot of issues for me, including my "same-face syndrome". I attempt to give each character a different face shape/structure, eye shapes, etc. when designing them.
The fonts I use for this website are "Baskervville" and "Libre Baskerville". If you know, you know.
The "flourish" Shirleigh performs in Entry 5 in the Strings of Fate arc is called a chiburi or chiburui. It was a technique samurai used to flick blood off of their swords/katana before sheathing them. This is one of many things that shows Shirleigh's interest in Japanese culture.
"Blue is the closest colour to truth" from Entry 12 in A Manor of Cerulean is a quote by Steven Tyler.
The name of Miriam's fiddle-leaf fig, Charlie, is a reference to Mia Fey's office plant from Ace Attorney.
Juniper's lines in Entry 13 of "Reichenbach Falls", "I can't imagine how it is...to be forbidden from loving" is a line from "Exist for Love" by AURORA.
In the "Until Death Do Us Part" arc, Juniper and Shirleigh's reunion was partially inspired by "The Conflict of the Mind" by AURORA.
Shirleigh's name was originally going to be spelled "Shirley" but I didn't like how it looked so I came up with the current spelling. I figured that if Ashley could be spelt "Ashleigh", then I could do the same with "Shirley". I like it much better. Looks more like...Shirleigh, lol.
Miriam has given her the nickname of Sherrie (Inspired by Frogwares' Sherlock Holmes games!).
Shirleigh has lupophobia.
Her name was originally Jane. I'm so glad I changed it.
Juniper is left-handed.
As stated in A Manor of Cerulean, Juniper likes life science(s), one of which being dendrology. This is a nod to her name.
Miriam was originally going to be indifferent towards Shirleigh, but after fleshing out their family's backstory and characters, I decided to make her super supportive of her sister.
I love her personality a lot.
Originally, Jade was a yandere. And a school mathematics teacher. And had a connection to Shirleigh as a child. Yeah. And the more I expanded on this version of her character, the more I strongly disliked it, so I completely scrapped it and I am very glad that I did.
She has one of my favourite designs.
You may have caught this in her character illustrations, but she has hairpins resembling the multiplication and subtraction symbols, the buttons on her suit jacket are addition symbols, her earrings are pi symbols and she wears a necklace with the symbol for the golden ratio. All of these accessories are also, indeed, golden. I couldn't quite figure out how to include the obelus in her design.
Has learned Japanese, British, and American sign language to better communicate with his deaf/hearing-impaired fanbase but often mixes them up which leads to some funny instances.
I have changed Maxwell's ethnicity and nationality at least five different times. He was originally English, then I toyed around with making him Indian, Egyptian, Nigerian, Jamaican, etc. I decided to make him Egyptian of Moroccan descent in the end.
Walker's name literally came from the fact that they "walk" the streets.
Walker's turtleneck outfits and singular left earring are a nod to Final Fantasy VII.
Their design started out with me wanting to create a character with a hairstyle that a nail tech at my local salon sports. I love a bob haircut!
Azriel is an entirely original character! Their design was influenced by a hairstyle I saw on Pinterest.
They are albino.
